Yemen, along with Ethiopia, is fundamental to the growth, brewing, and dispersion of coffee throughout the world. Yemeni coffee dates back to 1,200 CE and was originally drunk by Sufi monks who wanted to stay alert during evening prayers. Most historical sources credit these monks with brewing the world's first cup of coffee; previously, the coffee beans were chewed and consumed as snacks. Yemen is located in western Asia, across the Red Sea from Ethiopia, and has ideal conditions for coffee growing, if not for exporting the coffee. Most Yemeni coffee is grown at extremely high elevations on small farms in remote locations which can make processing and transporting a challenge. The Mocha Matari is Yemen's -- and one of the world's -- finest coffee(s). African in character, this lovely coffee is medium roasted to preserve the bean's natural bittersweet chocolate base and bright, almost tart berry notes. Complex and highly acidic with intrinsic balance, and a smooth, silky mouthfeel, this bold brew is sure to enchant you! To learn more about Yemeni coffee, click here.
